The Side Bangs

Grab those combs and hair clips because the side bang is coming back in!

At the past Dior Men’s Fashion Show, Sabrina Carpenter stunned with a barrette clipping aside her signature bangs. With Carpenter’s major influence in not only the music but also fashion we’re sure to see a lot more girlies trading in their blowdry brushes for hair clips. Of course to give credit where credit is due, we cannot talk about the side bangs without a mention of the original innovator Audrey Hepburn who rocked her micro side bangs way back in 1953. First seen in her film Roman Holiday with a pixie cut complimenting the look in the back. Could this be a factor of the 50’s resurgence we are seeing in the current fashion scene?

1950’s Dresses

If you’ve taken a peak at any fashion retailers section for dresses lately you may notice a resemblance between them and a 1950’s women's wear advertisement. With their form fitting bodices and tea length circle skirts we can see them making their way back on to the clothing racks. The silhouette of these dresses are most definitely inspired by Christian Dior’s “New Look” from 1946. Dior’s New Look was popularized in the 1950s because of its post war celebration of femininity. After years of having to ration materials for war effort, women were able to flaunt fun everyday dresses that used a preposterous amount of fabric for the skirt. Some believe these designs are resurging because they were a commemoration of hard times coming to an end, and due to the fact we just got through a global pandemic while also facing current global sorrows that are still on going to this day, many people want to escape from the horrors of the world and go back to simpler times such as the romanticized perception of the 1950’s. While the past can be heavily glamourized through our modern eyes, it should be acknowledged that during the 1950’s era, many human rights were restricted from people of colour, women, disabled people, and members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. As best said by the historian and author Blair Imani: “Vintage Style not Vintage Values”.

Polka Dots

Get ready to steal from Minnie Mouse’s closet because polka dots are making their way into the fashion scene. Ever since January when we saw the pop star Olivia Rodrigo flaunt the dots in a chic black polka dot dress, the print has been just about everywhere. Named after the Czech dance, its creation starts in the 1760’s. While the print was created in this time they weren’t too popular as they resembled the symptom of sores that would appear as a result of catching the plague. Polka dot print really started to make their mark during the industrial revolution in the mid 1800s. Those spunky little dots can give a youthful and sporadic feel to any look. Nowadays you can find the print trending in forms of skirts, dresses, shirts, and capris.

The Coastal Aesthetic

Do you want to dress like you got a beach house out of ruining two brothers’ relationship? Well do we have the style for you! Lately we’ve seen a lot of blue and white summer outfits topped with a tote bag and seashell motifs. Think flowy linen skirts with a navy blue tank-top while strolling along the beach. This style is seen through media like “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and heavily in “Mamma Mia”. The aesthetic began to make big waves (pun intended) all the way back in 2022 and we’ve seen it consistently flow back into the trend cycle ever since then. It’s a perfect essence to keep in mind when planning what to pack for any upcoming summer trips.
